FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

Why book with Your Hearing Clinic over other Audiology practices?

At Your Hearing Clinic, you’ll experience the difference — discreet, personalised care delivered by an award-winning expert with over 16 years of specialist audiology experience. Led by the UK & European Audiologist of the Year (2013), we combine world-class clinical expertise with genuine warmth and attention to detail. Every appointment is unhurried, every recommendation is tailored, and every client receives premium aftercare designed around their lifestyle.

Can I bring someone with me to my appointment?

Yes — and many people find it helpful. In fact, this is something we encourage at Your Hearing Clinic. A family member or friend can offer support, help remember questions, and give useful feedback about hearing changes at home.

What happens during a hearing test?

First, we discuss your hearing and any situations you’re finding harder and factors that are specific to you. This is also achieved through a detailed questionnaire to understand your individual situation. Then we check the outer ear and eardrum, followed by a series of listening tests. We’ll explain your results clearly and talk through any helpful next steps — no pressure and no rush.

Can wax removal help if my ears feel full after flying?

If the feeling is due to wax, microsuction often helps right away. If it’s due to pressure in the middle ear (common after flying), we can check your eardrum movement to see what’s causing it and advise on the best way to relieve it safely.

Do hearing aids need batteries?

Some do, but most newer models are rechargeable. You simply place them in a small charger overnight — just like charging a phone — and they’re ready for the next day. At Your Hearing Clinic, we'll demonstrate everything you need to know.

Can I wear hearing aids with glasses?

Yes. Most hearing aids are slim (or In The Ear) and sit comfortably behind the ear alongside glasses. After a few days, most people don’t even notice they’re wearing both.

Are hearing aids difficult to use?

Modern hearing aids are designed to be simple and intuitive. Many adjust automatically, so you don’t need to change settings all the time. At Your Hearing Clinic, we’ll show you exactly how to use them and provide ongoing support while you get used to them.

Why do I struggle hearing in groups or busy places?

This is one of the first signs of age-related hearing changes. The ears may still detect sound, but the brain has to work harder to separate speech from background noise. A hearing test will show how well your ears are processing speech, not just tones.

Should I be concerned if only one ear is affected?

If hearing changes or tinnitus occur just in one ear, it’s always worth checking sooner rather than later. Often it’s something simple like wax, but occasionally it can be related to the auditory nerve — so a hearing test helps us make sure everything is healthy. At Your Hearing Clinic, we do thorough diagnostic testing to identify issues or rule out other problems, as well as referring onto your GP or specialist ENT where required.

 Can stress make tinnitus worse?

Yes — stress can increase how noticeable tinnitus feels. When the brain is tired or stressed, it tends to focus more on internal sounds. Relaxation strategies, better sleep, and sound therapy often help reduce how intrusive tinnitus feels.

Do cotton buds help clean my ears?

Actually, cotton buds tend to push wax deeper into the ear, which can make blockages worse over time. They also increase the risk of irritation or scratching the ear canal. If you feel like your ears are blocked, it’s best to have them checked rather than try to clean them yourself.

Do I need a GP referral to get hearing aids?

No — you can book directly with us at Your Hearing Clinic. If anything needs medical attention, we will write to your GP or ENT for continuity of care.

Is microsuction uncomfortable?

Most people say it might feel like a strange sensation but not painful and not uncomfortable. You may hear the suction noise, but the process is gentle and usually very quick.

Is tinnitus permanent?

Not always. Sometimes tinnitus improves once hearing is supported or wax is removed. Even when tinnitus remains, there are very effective strategies to help the brain tune it out so it becomes far less noticeable.

How often should I get ear wax removed?

For most people, once a year is fine, but is dependant on the individual and their circumstances. If you naturally produce more wax or use hearing aids you may need to be seen more often. At Your Hearing Clinic, we assess the ear health and if we detect any infections or anything that requires further medical assessment we will refer on to your GP or specialist ENT.

Do you offer home visits?

At Your Hearing Clinic, all of the specialist diagnostic and treatment equipment is within the clinic so unfortunately we do not offer home visits. However, we can set up remote consultations where applicable and for follow-up discussions. Our clinic is conveniently located on the ground floor, with wheelchair access and toilets if required. We do offer free onsite parking in a dedicated space outside the clinic by Stansted Mountfitchet Station, so transport links whether by car, bus or train are convenient if coming from nearby towns and villages such as; Stansted, Bishop’s Stortford, Takeley, Elsenham and nearby areas.

Can I try hearing aids before deciding?

Yes — we offer hearing aid trials at Your Hearing Clinic onsite with the recommend device that is suitable to your type of hearing loss. Once purchased you can listen in real life, go home, walk around, chat, watch TV — and truly feel the difference before choosing the device is right for you and your family. We schedule follow-ups with you and we offer 90 days to decide if they're benefitting you, which we're confident they will.

Will I get used to hearing aids straight away?

Most people notice an improvement immediately — but your brain takes a little time to adjust to clearer sound. It’s like new glasses: things become sharper, but your brain gets used to processing it again. At Your Hearing Clinic, we support you through that adjustment period and will schedule check-ups with you over subsequent weeks and months.

Are hearing aids noticeable?

Modern hearing aids are very small and discreet. At Your Hearing Clinic, we are aligned with the top manufacturers with the latest technology models that can be programmed bespoke to your hearing needs. Many sit behind the ear with a tiny clear tube, or completely inside the ear where others won’t see them. Most people say their family notice the hearing improvement, not the hearing aid.

Is a private hearing test better than one on the NHS?

The NHS test is very useful, but it’s often short and focuses on medical need. A private hearing test is longer, more detailed, and looks closely at how you hear in real-life situations (not just beeps). You also get time to ask questions, get explanations, and consider personalised options.

Why do some people get ear wax more than others?

It’s partly genetics, partly ear shape, and sometimes linked to hearing aids or earbuds. Some people naturally produce more wax, just like some people have drier or oilier skin. If you’re prone to wax, a gentle maintenance clean every 6–12 months works well.

How long do hearing aids last?

Most hearing aids last 5–7 years with proper care. The technology can last longer, but like glasses, people often choose to upgrade sooner for clearer sound, better comfort, or easier features like Bluetooth streaming. At Your Hearing Clinic, you receive a 4 year warranty on the device.

Can I still have microsuction if I’ve had a perforated eardrum in the past?

Yes — microsuction is usually the preferred method for people with a history of perforation because it doesn’t use water. At Your Hearing Clinic, we will always examine the ear first to make sure it’s safe and comfortable for you.

Does ear wax cause tinnitus?

Yes, it can. If wax blocks the ear canal, the brain notices the lack of sound and sometimes replaces it with a ringing or humming noise. In many cases, once the wax is safely removed, the tinnitus reduces or goes away.

How do I know if my hearing loss is age-related or something else?

Age-related hearing loss usually happens gradually — you’ll find speech sounds softer or less clear, especially in background noise. If the change has come on slowly over months or years, it’s often age-related. But if hearing changes suddenly, or only in one ear, that should be checked urgently. A hearing test will clearly show the difference, and we can explain what’s going on in plain English.

How often should I have my hearing checked?

Most adults benefit from a hearing check every 1–2 years, just like going to the optician or dentist. If you’ve noticed muffled sound, tinnitus, or difficulty hearing in background noise, it’s best to book sooner. You can book at Your Hearing Clinic directly online, via email or on the phone.

Do I need a referral to book a hearing test?

No referral is needed — you can book directly with us. At Your Hearing Clinic, if we find anything that needs medical follow-up, we can contact your GP or ENT for you. Most people simply book when they notice sounds becoming unclear or the TV volume keeps creeping up.

What type of hearing aid is best for me?

The best hearing aid depends on your hearing test results, your lifestyle, and what’s most important to you (sound clarity, comfort, or invisibility). At Your Hearing Clinic, we offer a range of modern, discreet options — including very small devices that sit inside the ear — and we’ll help you choose what suits you best.

How much does a hearing aid cost?

At Your Hearing Clinic, hearing aid costs vary depending on the technology level and features. Devices can be purchased singularly or in a pair. Most people choose devices between £1,900 and £5,000 per pair. This includes your initial hearing assessment, fitting, tuning, aftercare, servicing, support and warranty. You’re not just buying a device — you’re getting ongoing care to make sure your hearing is the best it can be.

Is ear wax removal by microsuction safe?

Yes — at Your Hearing Clinic when it is carried out by a trained audiologist, microsuction is very safe. We use a gentle medical suction device while looking directly into the ear, so it’s precise and controlled. No water blasting, no syringing. It’s a quick, clean and comfortable procedure for most people.

More FAQs

1. Do I need a hearing test or is my hearing loss just caused by earwax?

A: Earwax can cause muffled hearing — but it’s not the only reason hearing can change. At our clinic near Stansted and Bishop’s Stortford, we check both wax and hearing levels in the same appointment, so you get a clear diagnosis and the right treatment. Many clients from Takeley, Sawbridgeworth and Harlow book in for this reason.

A: Yes — microsuction is considered the safest method. We provide this service for clients across Stansted, Elsenham, Takeley and Bishop’s Stortford, offering gentle, water-free wax removal under full visual guidance. It’s ideal for sensitive ears and long-term comfort.

3. How quickly can I book an ear-wax removal appointment?

4. Can I use cotton buds to clean my ears at home?
